Rafting and Whitewater Rafting are recreational outdoor activities which use inflatable raft to navigate a river of other body of water. This is often done on whitewater of different degrees of rough water. Dealing with risk is often a part of the experience.
This activity as an adventure sport has become popular since 1950s, if not earlier, evolving from individuals paddling 10 feet to 14 feet rafts with oars to multi person rafts propelled by oars and stern by a person at the stern, or by the use of oars.
There are six grades of difficulty in whitewater rafting. They range from simple (grade 1) to very dangerous (grade 6) and potential death or serious injuries.
The Kiulu River near Tamparuli just outside Kota Kinabalu, Sabah offers moderately adventure thrill seekers (grade 1 and grade 2) water rapids where rapids are relatively calmer and easier to navigate in the 15 km whitewater river rafting experience. A captain will be on your raft at all times giving instructions like ‘paddle forward’ and ‘paddle backward’ to build momentum. Glide with the rapid flow and go through the rapids in a bumpy ride. A lot of arm strength is required and everyone counts for the full effect. Its great fun for the adventurous family. You can also enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings during the scenic floats in between the action.
